Baltimore City Health Commissioner Urges Caution as Code Orange Air Quality Issued

BALTIMORE, MD (May 25, 2016)– With a heat index of 84 degrees and unhealthy air quality expected today, Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen is urging caution for Baltimore City residents, especially members of “sensitive groups.”

The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has issued a Code Orange air quality alert for today. During Code Orange days, members of “sensitive groups,” including those with heart/lung disease, asthma, children and older adults, may experience health effects, although the general public is unlikely to be affected.

“We want to make sure all Baltimoreans are extra cautious and remember to stay cool and hydrated," said Dr. Wen. "With Code Orange alert, please limit outdoor activities, especially if you have asthma or lung disease.”

With windchills expected to fall below 0˚F through this weekend, Health Commissioner Letitia Dzirasa today issued a Code Blue Extreme Cold declaration for Baltimore City beginning Friday morning, December 23 through Monday morning, December 26.  This is the first Code Blue Extreme Cold Alert for Baltimore City this season.
