Dr. Leana Wen Reminds Residents to Take Precautions to Prevent Foodborne Illness

Wednesday Dec 16th, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BALTIMORE, MD (December 16, 2015)– Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen today issued the following statement urging residents to take precautions in order to prevent foodborne illness throughout the winter season:

"In recent weeks, there has been an increase in visits to Baltimore-area emergency rooms with residents reporting gastrointestinal illness such as diarrhea, vomiting, and upset stomach. As the city's doctor, I want to remind Baltimore’s residents that as we approach the time for office gatherings, holiday parties, and other celebrations, we must all take steps to prevent ourselves from getting sick and stop spreading diseases to others around us, including children and older adults. So please, remember:

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water. This is the most effective method for stopping foodborne illness and other viruses that are common in the winter season.
  2. “Hot foods” should be hot —“cold foods” should be cold. Follow the “2 Hour Rule”: Foods should not sit at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
  3. Drink plenty of fluids including water. This keeps you hydrated. Watch your intake of alcohol, which can impair judgment and lead to other illness.
  4. If you see unsafe food handling or unsanitary conditions of a food services facility, please call and report anonymously at 3-1-1.
