Rep. Cummings Rips Pharma Company For Price Gouging On Heroin Overdose Drug

In his opening remarks at the Full House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing on the heroin epidemic, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) slammed the pharmaceutical company that makes the overdose antidote naloxone for profiting off the crisis.

“We can no longer allow drug companies to keep ripping off the taxpayers for life-saving medications,” Cummings said. “Cities all around the country have recognized the need to equip their first responders, police officers and public health officials with naloxone — a drug that can reverse opioid overdoses in a matter of minutes.”

To much fanfare last year, President Donald Trump ordered his administration to declare a public health emergency over the opioid epidemic. “As Americans, we cannot allow this to continue,” Trump said at the time. “It is time to liberate our communities from this scourge of drug addiction.”

When I’ve asked experts about these approaches, it’s not that any of them are bad. It’s that they fall short. For instance, Leana Wen, the former health commissioner of Baltimore (and soon-to-be president of Planned Parenthood), said that the Support for Patients and Communities Act “is simply tinkering around the edges.”
