Petitioning The FDA For A Black Box Warning On Opioids and Benzos

Rhode Island health officials are calling on the Food and Drug Administration to warn consumers about the danger of combining prescription painkillers with anti-anxiety medications. That combination has fueled a rising number of accidental drug overdose deaths.

Rhode Island’s Health Department Director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott and Baltimore’s public health chief Dr. Leana Wen have signed a petition asking the FDA to put black box warnings on opioids and benzodiazepines. When combined, the pills can be deadly. Alexander-Scott says the public and doctors could benefit from a reminder.

To much fanfare last year, President Donald Trump ordered his administration to declare a public health emergency over the opioid epidemic. “As Americans, we cannot allow this to continue,” Trump said at the time. “It is time to liberate our communities from this scourge of drug addiction.”

When I’ve asked experts about these approaches, it’s not that any of them are bad. It’s that they fall short. For instance, Leana Wen, the former health commissioner of Baltimore (and soon-to-be president of Planned Parenthood), said that the Support for Patients and Communities Act “is simply tinkering around the edges.”
