Dr. Leana Wen was among the many community leaders at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield’s annual CareFirst A Salute to Our Community Partners event that recognized the work of more than 20 nonprofit community health organizations throughout Maryland. The event, held Jan. 27 in Annapolis, included remarks from Dr. Wen highlighting her priorities as the new Health Commissioner for Baltimore City and the success of existing partnerships between the City Health Department and organizations like CareFirst.

Among those successful initiatives is B’More for Healthy Babies (BHB) – a partnership between the Baltimore City Health Department, CareFirst and the Family League of Baltimore committed to improving birth outcomes throughout the city. Since its establishment in 2009, the BHB initiative has directly contributed to the improvement of infant and maternal health, including in 2012, when Baltimore’s infant mortality rate dropped to its lowest point ever.
